Total Undergraduate Enrollment Up At UI
Enrollment at the University of Iowa for the 2005 fall semester totals 29,642, down 103 students from 29,745 for the fall of 2004, according to the UI Office of the Registrar. The number of new freshmen totals 3,849 in 2005, down 168 from 4,017 in 2004. Total undergraduate enrollment stands at 20,300, up 165 students from 20,135 in 2004. This is the largest undergraduate enrollment since 1988, says Lola Lopes, UI associate provost for undergraduate education.
"From an undergraduate perspective, we are pleased with the enrollment results," Lopes says. "The freshman class is smaller than last year in part because we raised the bar a little for students in the lower half of their high school class. But the number of degree-seeking transfer students is up, and we have more continuing students as well, for a net increase of 165 undergraduates."
The change in the alternate admission threshold and the increase in transfer students, Lopes says, are both in line with the university's strategic goal of "tailoring admission policies to ensure that admitted students demonstrate both strong preparation and motivation for college-level work."
