Diwali commemorates the Indian Festival of Lights and symbolizes the defeat of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The festival's story comes from the Ramayana Hindu Epic where the god of good triumphed over the god of evil. The citizens of India celebrate the event every year with lights and fireworks.

The program starts with dinner at 6 p.m. catered by Taj Restaurant, followed by the cultural program at 8 p.m.

"It is an all-encompassing event that includes an Indian dinner, cultural music, folk dancing and theatrical performances," said Shruthi Bhatt, Diwali publicity chair.

About 1,000 people attend the event every year, making it one of the largest and most popular events held at the university.

The Indian Student Association is an officially recognized UI student group. More information is online, http://www.uiowa.edu/~isa.
