Two UI International Students Named Iowa International Fellows

Two University of Iowa international students have been selected to participate in the Iowa International Fellows Program, a leadership sponsored by the Iowa Council for International Understanding and the Stanley Foundation. The UI fellows are Karry Tse, an undergraduate from Hong Kong who is studying journalism and mass communication at the UI for one year as part of the International Student Exchange Program, and Devansh Dhutia, a graduate student from Tanzania studying computer science.

Some 80 Iowa college students from 39 countries will take part in the program, which involves four weekend workshops throughout the academic year in various locations around the state. Fellows will attend seminars with Iowa's leaders, take field trips to sites of cultural and historical significance and attend social activities that provide opportunities to have cultural exchanges and develop lasting international friendships.

The first session Oct. 21-22 in Des Moines will focus on Global Poverty. Fellows will complete service activities in the Des Moines community as part of Make A Difference Day and attend a panel discussion on taking leadership to meet human services needs in the community.

Additional workshops will be held Nov. 18-19 in Davenport, "A Midwest Celebration;" Jan. 22-23 in Des Moines, "Iowa Politics and Politicians;" and Feb. 24-25 in Marshalltown, "Iowa's Multicultural Communities."

The Iowa International Fellows program offers international students studying at Iowa colleges and universities an opportunity to meet, make friends and discuss global issues. It also offers insight into Iowa's government, education, business and politics and the state's place in the global arena.

"Through this kind of hands-on learning, students come to understand American commitment to volunteerism and have the opportunity to personally interact with the citizens of Iowa. It's a great way to develop leadership and promote international understanding," said ICIU Executive Director Michele Soria.
