Disability Art Entries Sought For Second Annual Contest
In celebration of October as Disability Awareness Month, the University of Iowa Council on Disability Awareness is sponsoring its second annual art contest to honor people with disabilities and the role they play in enriching the diversity of campus and the greater community.
Additionally, several events are planned, including two scheduled Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Review Task Force Open Forums. The task force is conducting a campus-wide assessment of the university's compliance with the ADA. The forums, which provide members of the UI community an opportunity to provide comments about campus accessibility, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 25 in W401 of the John Pappajohn Business Building, and 3:30 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31 in Room 102 of the Center for Disabilities & Development on the northwest of the UI Hospitals and Clinics complex on Hawkins Drive.
And on Oct. 27, Student Disability Services will hold an open house from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 3100 Burge Hall.
The art contest is open to anyone in Johnson County -- children and adults -- and all members of the UI campus community (including faculty, staff or students who live outside of Johnson County). Art entries must depict disability in the greater context of diversity. One winner will be selected from each age group -- 4 to 16 years old, and 16 years and older -- to receive the Susan Rotman Award. Winners also will receive a cash prize, $100 for the youth winner and $500 for the older winner.
The awards will be presented Jan. 19 during the celebration of the Martin Luther King Week of Diversity. The winning artwork will then be featured in a show for the duration of January.
Registration by Nov. 30 is required to participate in the contest, although the actual deadline for submissions will be in January. For details and a registration form, contact Amy Mikelson, chair of the UI Council on Disability Awareness, at 319-356-1514, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
