UI To Dedicate Pomerantz Center Oct. 21
Few universities in the nation have a facility dedicated to enhancing students' total educational experiences -- from admission to graduation and beyond. On Oct. 21, the University of Iowa will dedicate its new Pomerantz Center, an innovative and comprehensive building that is designed to provide a breadth of academic, career and recruiting resources for prospective and current students, as well as for alumni.
The dedication begins at 4 p.m. in the 400-seat HNI Auditorium (C20), located on the lower level of the Pomerantz Center. University officials and representatives from the UI Foundation and the colleges of business, arts and sciences, and engineering will all provide remarks, as will Des Moines business leader, UI graduate and Pomerantz Center benefactor Marvin Pomerantz. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, there will be a reception from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., along with self-guided tours.
The 70,000-square-foot Pomerantz Center is located across from the John Pappajohn Business Building at the corner of Market Street and the T. Anne Cleary Walkway. Designed by Savage-Ver Ploeg & Associates, Inc., of Des Moines, it houses a variety of student-centered programs and services.
The concept for the facility is unique. On their first visit to campus, prospective students and their families will visit the Admission Visitors Center on the first floor. After enrolling at the university, students will receive academic advising on the building's second floor in the Academic Advising Center. As students explore their academic and career interests, prepare for internships and eventually interview for a job after graduation, they will utilize the many services of the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Career Center on the building's third floor. The fourth floor houses the executive and full-time Tippie School of Management programs and also provides two classrooms for these programs. In addition, the building offers the 400-seat HNI Auditorium and six general-use classrooms.
"Funding for the Pomerantz Center is an example of how a major donor, corporations, organizations and individuals came together to support a project that will benefit students and alumni for many years to come," said Chuck Kierscht, interim president of the UI Foundation. Total cost of the Pomerantz Center was $17.6 million, with the $10 million lead gift coming from Des Moines philanthropists Marvin Pomerantz and his wife, Rose Lee, community leaders who have provided longtime support to the University of Iowa.
More than 80 percent of the project cost ($14+ million) came from private gifts. Iowa-based corporations such as Rockwell Collins, John Deere, Pearson Educational Measurement, HNI and Pella Corporation have demonstrated their support for the project by providing significant support. In addition, the UI Alumni Association and UI Parents Association made key financial contributions, further demonstrating the impact that the Pomerantz Center will have on the lives of UI students before and after graduation.
"Marvin Pomerantz is a visionary. His lead gift and belief in this project are what has made this facility a reality," said UI President David Skorton. "Within one building, we are able to provide services to students from their first day on campus through their placement after graduation. Students, alumni, employers, and the state of Iowa all benefit."
The Oct. 21 dedication ceremony will feature comments from President Skorton; Linda Maxson, dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; P. Barry Butler, dean of the UI College of Engineering; and Gary C. Fethke, dean of the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business. In addition, University of Iowa Foundation speakers will include Floyd Akins, senior director of development and Charles M. Kierscht, interim president. The event is free and open to the public.
