Scholar Of Islam, Christian-Muslim Affairs To Speak At UI Oct. 24

Jane Smith, a leading expert in Islam and Christian-Muslim affairs, will speak on "Can We Share the World? Hope for the Christian-Muslim Dialogue," at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 in Room 101, Biology Building East. Smith was invited by the Department of Religious Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to deliver the annual James C. Spalding Memorial Lecture.

Smith is a professor of Islamic studies at Hartford Theological Seminary and Co-Director of the institution's Duncan Black Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam & Christian-Muslim Relations. She has conducted extensive research on Muslim communities in America, Christian theology in relation to Islam and historical relations between Christians and Muslims. Smith is the author of "Islam in America" (Columbia Press, 1999) and the co-editor of "The Muslim World," a journal dedicated to the study of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations.

James C. Spalding taught religion at the UI for 36 years and served as director of the School of Religion (now department of religious studies) from 1971-1979. During his tenure he taught a variety of courses for undergraduates, advised more than 40 Ph.D. students and oversaw a reorganization of the school's Board of Fellows. The James C. Spalding Memorial Lecture was established in his honor after his death in 1996.
