Nov. 30 Event To Celebrate Gibson's NAS Election

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine will host a tribute to and a lecture by David T. Gibson, Ph.D., the Edwin B. Green Chair Emeritus in Biocatalysis and Microbiology and UI professor emeritus of microbiology, from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Dr. Prem Sahai Auditorium in the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility (1110A MERF).

The event celebrates and honors Gibson's election earlier this year to the National Academy of Sciences (http://news-releases.uiowa.edu/2005/may/050305gibson-nas.html). Gibson was elected to the nation's most prestigious scientific organization last May in recognition of his distinguished achievements in original research. In particular, his discoveries have revealed how bacterial enzymes break down environmental pollutants, toxic chemicals and naturally occurring compounds. His pioneering studies have provided the framework for development of the fields of bioremediation and biocatalysis.

Following remarks by UI Carver College of Medicine Dean Jean Robillard and UI Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Hogan, Gibson will present a lecture titled, "Bacterial Oxygen Fixation and the Carbon Cycle."

A reception will follow in the MERF atrium. The event is free and open to the public.
