Squier Receives ACS Lifetime Award of Excellence
Christopher Squier, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies in the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, was awarded the American Cancer Society's Lifetime Award of Excellence at the organization's Iowa Volunteer and Donor Recognition Celebration, held Oct. 28 in Ames.
The Lifetime Award of Excellence is given to an individual, group or organization that has shown sustained excellence in support of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Recognized as "one of the most influential volunteers of the ACS," Squier served on the ACS Midwest Board of Directors from 1998 to 2005, and he is currently serving his second term on the Iowa Advisory Council.
Squier has been chair of the Iowa Commission on Tobacco Use Prevention and Control, and he has served on numerous tobacco control coalitions. As a spokesperson for ACS, he meets with state legislators about tobacco control issues. He also organized the Johnson County ACS Volunteer Leadership Group, and he assisted in communication between UI and the ACS on development of the Hope Lodge, a facility to created to help people undergoing treatment for cancer.
In addition to his role as associate dean for research, Squier is a professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine in the UI College of Dentistry. He leads the college's oral soft tissue program and directs the oral sciences graduate program. His research interests include oral cancer and the permeability of skin and oral mucosa to medications and substances such as alcohol and tobacco.
