Golfing Fore Cancer Organizers Present Check To Holden Cancer Center
Organizers of the Golfing Fore Cancer fundraising tournament recently presented a check for $18,000 to benefit patients and their families receiving care at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa.
Golfing Fore Cancer committee members met with George Weiner, M.D., director of Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the C.E. Block Chair of Cancer Research in the Roland and Ruby Holden Cancer Research Laboratory, on the UI campus. The group presented the proceeds of its first annual event held last August and toured the research facility.
"I am delighted and honored to accept this generous donation on behalf of the patients and families we serve," Weiner told the committee members. "Support such as this is crucial to our efforts to reduce the deaths and suffering caused by cancer."
The funds will help supply items that will provide additional care, comfort and support for patients and their families receiving care at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"We want to thank the countless community-minded volunteers, business owners, corporate sponsors and golfers who made this such a successful event," said Mike Diers, co-chair of the Golfing Fore Cancer Committee. "We are already planning our second annual tournament, and we invite anyone who has an interest in getting involved to contact us."
In addition to Diers, Lisa Boswell, Todd Boswell, Mary Fitzgerald, Dick Hodges, Carol Jefferson, Brenda Strief and David Williams also serve on the Golfing Fore Cancer committee.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is the state's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as the leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading edge research and educating the public about cancer.
