Steve Fleagle Named UI Chief Information Officer
Steve Fleagle has been named associate vice president and chief information officer at the University of Iowa, effective immediately, Provost Michael Hogan announced today. Fleagle has filled this role on an interim basis since January 2004.
The CIO leads campus-wide information technology planning and operations, including telecommunications; coordinates development and delivery of IT services for instruction, research and administration; supervises the Information Technology Services (ITS) organization; and represents the university's information technology interests regionally and nationally. The CIO reports primarily to Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Hogan with secondary reporting to Senior Vice President and Treasurer Doug True.
"Steve emerged from a strong pool of candidates as a clear choice to lead the continued integration of information technology into the teaching and research efforts of faculty and staff," Hogan said. "Steve's experience in academic research labs, campus-wide communication projects and management of an IT enterprise provides him with the practical and strategic knowledge needed to be successful as a CIO at a major research university."
A native of DeWitt, Iowa, Fleagle earned an engineering degree from the UI in 1984. From 1984 to 1994, he was an engineer and the technical director of the UI Cardiovascular Image Processing Laboratory. From 1994 to 1998, he was a project leader and management team member in ITS, and from 1998-2004 he was director of Telecommunication and Network Services, a department of ITS.
"I'm honored to accept the CIO position at the University of Iowa and look forward to continuing to work with the IT community on the many exciting projects that are underway," Fleagle said. "We will no doubt face challenges, but the strength and dedication of the community makes me believe that we can continue our success."
As Interim CIO, Fleagle has provided leadership and direction for a number of initiatives including selecting and installing a new 23 terabyte storage area network, upgrading the mainframe computing system, selecting and implementing a new course management system, replacing the system of telephone switches, implementing a new campus-wide email and calendar system, and selecting and implementing a new student information system. He also has been a leader in an effort to build a regional optic network that would initially connect the UI, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota and Iowa State University, with future plans to include schools and government research laboratories in Nebraska and North and South Dakota.
Information Technology Services provides integrated information technology support for the UI campus, including computing facilities; administrative information systems; voice, data, and video communications networks and services; technological resources for teaching and research needs; Instructional Technology Centers (ITCs); and a variety of related services and support.
