DeGowin Blood Center Kicks Off Summer Campaign
On June 1, the DeGowin Blood Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will kick off its fifth annual, summer-long, T-shirt blood drive.
Everyone making a blood or platelet donation between June 1 and Aug. 31, 2005, will receive a free "Iowa Blood Donor" T-shirt.
"It's a great promotion for us," said Mitch Overton, donor recruitment coordinator for the DeGowin Blood Center. "The summer months are traditionally slow times for blood donations, so we like to do something special to motivate our donors to come in when there are so many other things to do.
"We've established a bit of a tradition the last several years and our donors really look forward to it," Overton added. "It's a nice way to say 'thank you' to those who support our programs."
The DeGowin Blood Center supplies blood products for UI Hospitals and Clinics' patients. Last year, there were more than 33,000 total transfusions performed at UI Hospitals and Clinics, or an average of nearly 90 every day.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be cold and flu symptom-free for five days to donate blood.
The DeGowin Blood Center has one permanent donation site in room C250-GH in UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. In addition, the center also conducts mobile blood drives in various locations throughout the area.
Call 319-356-2058 for more information or to make an appointment to donate. For further information, visit the DeGowin Blood Center's Web site at www.uihealthcare.com/bloodcenter.
