Local UI Student Elected To Phi Beta Kappa Membership

A group of 83 University of Iowa undergraduates was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences on Sunday, May 1.

Ten students were elected using the "junior standard," which requires students to have completed a minimum 80 semester hours of UI coursework, with a minimum 3.90 UI and cumulative grade point averages. In the list below, ** indicates election as a junior. The other 73 students were elected using the "senior standard," which requires students to have completed a minimum 100 semester hours of college coursework (with at least 60 hours at the UI), with a minimum 3.80 UI and cumulative grade point averages. All students elected to membership have satisfied the General Education--Foreign Language requirement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776, at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. More than 15,000 new members are elected each year from 262 chapters across the United States.

Students are listed alphabetically according to hometown with Iowa hometowns listed first. (** indicates election as a junior)

AMES: Elizabeth Bryant, a junior studying political science and international studies in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Bryant is a 2002 graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High School and is the daughter of Jon and Bonnie Bryant of Ames.

ANKENY: Paul C. Avey of Ankeny, a University of Iowa senior studying history and political science with a minor in economics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Avey is a 2001 graduate of Ankeny High School and the son of Donald and Kathy Avey of Ankeny.

ANKENY: Laura Rhoades of Ankeny, a senior studying political science and communication studies in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Rhoades is a 2001 graduate of Ankeny High School and the daughter of Frank and Susan Rhoades of Ankeny.

BETTENDORF: **Christy Sullivan of Bettendorf, a junior studying theatre arts and psychology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Sullivan is a 2002 graduate of Bettendorf High School and the daughter of Louise and Neil Sullivan and Robert Ferris, all of Bettendorf.

CARROLL: Ingrid Gronstal of Carroll, a senior studying psychology and biology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Gronstal is a 2001 graduate of Kuemper High School and the daughter of Tom and Joan Gronstal of Carroll.

CASCADE: Jake Trumm of Cascade, a senior studying political science and economics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Trumm is a 2001 graduate of Cascade High School and the son of Bill and Colllen Trumm of Cascade.

CEDAR FALLS: **Kristen Formanek of Cedar Falls, a senior studying journalism and studio art with a minor in English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Formanek is a 2002 graduate of Cedar Falls High School and the daughter of Gary and Sandra Formanek of Cedar Falls.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Benjamin Fuller of Cedar Rapids, a senior studying biological science in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Fuller is a 2000 graduate of Xavier High School and the son of Mike and Julie Fuller of Cedar Rapids.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Bradley Rehak of Cedar Rapids, a senior studying history and English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Rehak is a 1999 graduate of Washington High School and the son of Adrian and Diane Rehak of Cedar Rapids.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Whitney Webb of Cedar Rapids, a senior studying economics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Webb is a 2001 graduate of Kennedy High School and the daughter of Jeff and Mary Webb of Cedar Rapids.

CLINTON: Kayla J. Borja of Clinton, a junior studying theatre arts in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and English education in the College of Education, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Borja is a 2002 graduate of Clinton High School and the daughter of Kenneth and Jeanne Borja of Clinton.

CLINTON: Megan Marie Vens of Clinton, a senior studying biology and elementary education in the University of Iowa Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and of Education, respectively, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Vens is a 2001 graduate of Clinton High School and the daughter of Randall and Brenda Vens and granddaughter of Raymond and Verla Vens and Carl and Sharon Alm of Clinton.

COUNCIL BLUFFS: Kayleen Dresen of Council Bluffs, a junior studying economics, English, and linguistics in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Dresen is a 2002 graduate of Lewis Central High School, the granddaughter of Monona Johnson and Patricia Carrigan, and niece of Michelle Carrigan, all of Council Bluffs.

DAVENPORT: Justin Cook of Davenport, a senior studying physics and astronomy in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Cook is a 2001 graduate of Davenport Central High School and the son of Jeff and Beth Cook of Davenport.

DES MOINES: Steve Purtle of Des Moines, a senior studying chemistry in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Purtle is a 2002 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School and the son of Mary and Mark Purtle of Des Moines.

DUBUQUE: Lindsey Schneider of Dubuque, a junior studying economics and English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Schneider is a 2002 graduate of Hempstead High School and the daughter of Sally and Michael Schneider of Dubuque.

FORT DODGE: Elizabeth Bryant, a junior studying political science and international studies in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. GOWRIE: Jeremy Decker of Gowrie, a senior studying anthropology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the UI chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Decker is a 2001 graduate of Prairie Valley High School and the son of Lynne Decker.

LAMOTTE: Tricia Kremer of LaMotte, a senior studying communication studies, English, and health and sports studies in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Kremer is a 2001 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and the daughter of Karen and Gary Kremer of LaMotte.

MARION: Lauren Smiley of Marion, a University of Iowa senior studying journalism and Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Smiley is a 2001 graduate of Linn-Mar High School and the daughter of Charles and Linda Smiley of Marion.

MASON CITY: **Monica Verma of Mason City, a junior studying biology with a minor in Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Verma is a 2002 graduate of Mason City High School and the daughter of Rajinder and Asha Verma of Mason City.

MOKENA: Patrick McGonagill of Mokena, a senior studying history with a minor in Spanish in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McGonagill is a 2001 graduate of Lincoln-Way High School and the son of William and Kathleen McGonagill of Mokena.

MONTICELLO: **Stacy Ehrisman of South English, a senior studying political science, international studies and Japanese in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Ehrisman is a 2002 graduate of English Valleys High School and the daughter of Gary and Julie Ehrisman of Monticello and Ben and Michelle Garrett of South English.

MONTICELLO: **Morgan Keedy of Monticello, a senior studying journalism and mass communication in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Keedy is a 2001 graduate of Monticello High School and the son of Mark and Nancy Keedy of Monticello.

MOUNT VERNON: Shannon Carter of Mount Vernon, a senior studying clinical psychology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Carter is a 2001 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and the daughter of Scott and Janice Carter of Mount Vernon.

NEW HAMPTON: Grant Griffin of New Hampton, a senior studying Russian and history in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Griffin is a 2001 graduate of New Hampton High School and the son of Gary and Kris Griffin of New Hampton.

OELWEIN: Danielle Wagner of Oelwein, a senior studying journalism and history with a minor in political science in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Wagner is a 2001 graduate of Oelwein High School and the daughter of Dave and Melinda Wagner of Oelwein.

OSAGE: Tom Knudtson of Osage, a University of Iowa senior studying exercise science and psychology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Knudtson is a 2000 graduate of Osage Community High School and the son of Mark and Connie Knudtson of Osage.

OTTUMWA: **Michelle Christine McMillan of Ottumwa, a senior studying health promotion, psychology, and theatre in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. McMillan is a 2001 graduate of Ottumwa High School and the daughter of William and Jana McMillan of Ottumwa.

Quint is a 2000 graduate of Warren Township High School and the daughter of Richard and Karen Quint of Gurnee.

MUNDELEIN: Kelly M. Dolan of Mundelein, Ill., a University of Iowa senior studying elementary education in the University of Iowa College of Education and psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Dolan is a 2001 graduate of Mundelein High School and the daughter of Barb and Tom Dolan of Mundelein.

WHEATON: Karen Emmerson of Wheaton, Ill., a junior studying political science and statistics with a minor in French in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Emmerson is a 2002 graduate of Wheaton Warrenville South and the daughter of Kathleen and Timothy Emmerson of Wheaton.

Minnesota

ST. CLOUD: Laura Ewing of St. Cloud, a senior studying music (cello performance) in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Ewing is a 2001 graduate of Apollo High School and the daughter of Anne and James Ewing of St. Cloud.

FARIBAULT: Emily Wagstrom of Faribault, Minn., a senior studying exercise science in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Wagstrom is a 2001 graduate of Faribault High School and the daughter of Brian and Liz Wagstrom of Faribault.

New Jersey

Stephen Sherman of New Providence, N.J., a junior studying American studies and English in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Sherman is a 2002 graduate of New Providence High School and the son of Robert and Sandra Sherman of New Providence.

Pennsylvania

OLEY: Tammy Louise Leister of Oley, Pa., a University of Iowa senior studying elementary education, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Leister is a 2001 graduate of Oley Valley High School and the daughter of Gary and Patricia Leister of Oley.

Utah

NEPHI: Stephen Gliske, of Nephi, Utah, a junior studying physics, mathematics and music composition in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Gliske is a 1999 graduate of Juab High School and the son of Robert Gliske and Dorothy and George Nelson, and the husband of Tamie (Eggleston) Gliske. Stephen Gliske is also the recipient of the UI's 2005-2006 Phi Beta Kappa Stevens Scholarship for students in the natural sciences.

Japan

TOKYO: **Risa Ohkawa of Tokyo, Japan, a junior studying economics and psychology with a minor in theatre in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was initiated into the University of Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the premier honor society for undergraduate students in the liberal arts and sciences. Ohkawa is a 2002 graduate of Futaba High School in Tokyo and the daughter of Kazuto Ohkawa and Yoshiko Ohkawa.
