UI Business Student Vying For Extreme Sports Video Award
University of Iowa business student Brad Phillips will travel to Orange County, Calif. next week to see if his company will win an award for the best extreme sports video in the industry.
Phillips is the owner of Innervision Industries, which makes action sports videos showing the on- and off-track exploits of motocross and all-terrain vehicle (ATV) racers. Innervision was nominated for two Xtremey Awards, which will be presented May 10 at the Shark Club in Costa Mesa, Calif. Many of the top extreme sports filmmakers will gather at the event to see who will win top honors in this growing industry.
Innervision was nominated in the "Best Off-Road Video" category for its second video release on DVD titled "Carpe Diem" which follows the life of one of the top quad racers in the U.S. Quads are four-wheel, off-road vehicles that reach speeds of up to 100 mph and jump a distance of over 150 feet. Innervision's "Tips and Tricks with John Natalie Jr." was nominated for "Best Instructional Video."
"This award nomination gives instant recognition to our company in its first year of business; other companies nominated have 10 or 20 years experience. It's the biggest award we can win," Phillips said.
Phillips, a business management and entrepreneurial studies major, started the company at the Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory (BELL) at 323 N. Clinton St. in Iowa City. The UI's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center provides free office space and intense mentoring at the BELL for students who want to launch business ventures while studying entrepreneurship. After getting his start and making a profit on the venture, Phillips moved out of the BEEL and now has an office on Scott Boulevard in Iowa City.
Phillips and his three employees travel to off-road motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle races across the U.S., filming the racers and giving fans a behind-the scenes look at the racing lifestyle and attitude. After compiling and editing the video at their office, the final video is burned onto a DVD and duplicated for distribution.
"Carpe Diem" and Innervision's first release, "Tips and Tricks" have sold a total of 6,000 units.
Phillips manages to balance his studies while running a business that centers on a sport he loves. "I travel around the country and film the top stars showing what they do best," Phillips said. "It's a great job -- I have a lot of fun and make money doing it."
