The second of four finalists for the University of Iowa Ombudsperson position is on campus today and Tuesday for interviews and an open forum.

Rita Burns, who owns a private practice in Milwaukee called Mediation and Conflict Management Services, will hold a forum at 3:30 p.m. today (Monday, May 2) in the Iowa Memorial Union's Terrace Room. The event is open to the public.

Last week, finalist Cynthia Joyce of New Haven, Conn., interviewed on campus. The schedule for the two remaining finalists is as follows:

May 9-10: Andrea Goldblum. Forum scheduled for 3:30 p.m. May 9 in the IMU's Terrace Room. Goldblum is currently assistant dean of students and director of the Office of Student Integrity at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

May 16-17: Laura Reed. Forum scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 16 in the IMU's Terrace Room. Reed is associate director of human resources and director of organizational effectiveness at the UI.

As owner of Mediation and Conflict Management Services, Burns mediates workplace issues and multi-party matters, including court cases, and trains work groups and organization leaders in conflict resolution and constructive communication. Since 2002, she has also served part-time as ombudsperson for Marquette University.

Burns' degrees include a graduate certificate in dispute resolution from Marquette, a Ph.D. in religious studies from Marquette, a master's in Hebrew and Semitic studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a BA in music education from Benedictine College.

The finalists are being considered for a vacancy created when Maile Sagen, who has held the position since 1989, retires in July.

The UI Ombudsperson's Office offers informal dispute resolution for students, faculty and staff, and complaints to the office are confidential. The office's mission is to see that all members of the university community are treated fairly, as well as to serve as an information resource.
