Dream Sharer University Day Participants To Visit UI Thursday
Student participants in the University of Iowa's Dream Sharer University Day program will visit campus Thursday, March 24, for a storytelling workshop, video exhibition and physics presentation.
Dream Sharer is a collaboration involving the UI'S Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Opportunity at Iowa and the Jane Boyd Community House Achievement Academy in Cedar Rapids. The project is designed to help third- through eighth-grade students improve literacy skills and strengthen intergenerational relationships through storytelling and the sharing of oral histories. UI students mentor the participants and volunteer their time each week at the Jane Boyd Center.
The March 24 event, titled "Reach! Touch! Believe!," includes a storytelling workshop with storyteller Steve McGuire, a virtual video exhibition with videographer Doug Allaire, and a "Fun with Physics" presentation by UI physics professor Vincent Rogers. Students will also learn about various careers in the health sciences as part of a tour of UI Hospitals and Clinics and enjoy lunch in one of the university's dining halls.
The Dream Sharer program is one of the many programs coordinated by the Opportunity at Iowa office, the goal of which is to create and maintain campus diversity and to provide opportunities for all university students interested in other cultures. Opportunity at Iowa works collaboratively with other UI offices such as Admissions, Orientation, Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Student Financial Aid, the Graduate College and Support Service Programs to meet the university's goal of strengthening campus diversity.
The project is overseen by Nancy Humbles, multicultural affairs coordinator at Opportunity at Iowa, and Doty Taylor-Simpson, director of diversity resources in the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. Opportunity at Iowa is located at 224 Jessup Hall at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.
