Krajewski Appointed Rose & Joseph Summers Chair Of Engineering
Witold F. Krajewski, professor of civil and environmental engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been appointed Rose & Joseph Summers Chair in Water Resources Engineering.
Krajewski (pronounced "cray-EFF-ski"), who came to the UI in 1987, is a research engineer at IIHR--Hydroscience & Engineering and an internationally known researcher in the field of remote sensing of precipitation. He is currently involved in developing algorithms for NEXRAD, the national network of weather radars, and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, a joint U.S.-Japan satellite mission devoted to observations of rainfall in the tropics for use in climate modeling and prediction. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and a recipient of the Outstanding Researcher Award in Water Resources from the Iowa State Water Resources Research Institute (ISWRRI).
The Rose & Joseph Summers Chair in Water Resources Engineering, the naming of which honors Summers' late wife, was established in August 2001 through gifts to the University of Iowa Foundation from UI engineering graduate Joseph B. Summers of Hanford, Calif. Based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Summers Chair enables the college to further strengthen its internationally renowned programs in water resources and hydraulic engineering.
A member of the College of Engineering Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy, Summers received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the UI in 1948. He has served as a member of the UI Engineering Building Campaign Steering Committee for the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering Advisory Board, and Development Council. Summers is chairman of the board of Summers Engineering Inc., which he founded in 1962. An active consulting engineer, he has been a leader on water use, irrigation, and drainage issues in California and internationally. Summers received the 2002 UI Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award for Service.
