Community Program To Focus On Sports Medicine March 29

Sports medicine, including the treatment and prevention of sports-related injuries, will be the topic of the next "Health For Your Lifetime" program sponsored by University of Iowa Health Care.

The free, community program is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union, located at 825 Mormon Trek Blvd., in Iowa City.

Ned Amendola, M.D., UI professor of orthopaedics and director of the UI Sports Medicine Center, and Glenn Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UI Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, and director of research in UI Sports Medicine Center, will present, "Sports Medicine for the Athlete and Non-Athlete Alike."

From the high school athlete to the "weekend warrior," injuries are often part of the game or sport. From tennis elbow to runner's knee to an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tear, sports injuries can take their toll and can certainly slow down or end one's sport or game.

These two experts from the UI Sports Medicine Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics, which takes care of the Iowa Hawkeyes, will discuss:

--The keys to injury prevention.

--What is "normal" and when to seek help.

--Rehabilitation and exercise programs.

--Are anti-inflammatory medicines safe?

--The UI Sports Medicine Center -- a clinic designed to take care of the beginner and hardcore athlete in all of us.

Pre-registration is encouraged. To register or for more information, go to www.uihealthcare.com/classes, or call UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or toll-free at 800-777-8442.
