Children's Hospital Of Iowa To Host Reunion For Patients, Families
Hundreds of young patients cared for at the Children's Hospital of Iowa in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will return to Iowa City for a reunion with their caregivers beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25.
The first-of-its-kind event at Children's Hospital of Iowa will enable children and their families to reconnect with the facility and staff as recovered patients. More than 500 patients and their families are planning to attend the reunion.
"The staff becomes really a part of your family, the intensity of having a sick child in the hospital is overwhelming, and the medical experts and other staff become very important caregivers both to patients and to moms like me," said Amy Muston, a parent from Keokuk. Her son, Connor, is recovering from cancer.
Patients will receive a "Champions" t-shirt identifying them as a former patient at Children's Hospital of Iowa. Organizers invited approximately 4,000 patient families. These respondents will be identified as Children's Hospital Champions and will represent Children's Hospital of Iowa at various events that benefit the hospital.
An outdoor picnic will be held on the Children's Hospital of Iowa Play Court. The Play Court was funded by contributions to Children's Miracle Network from BP Amoco dealers and jobbers and serves as a recreation area for children and their families who visit the hospital. The two-hour event will include a barbecue luncheon, messages from parents to other parents and from staff members to patients and guests, as well as activities for the patients and their families.
Children's Hospital of Iowa at UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City is the state's longest-serving children's hospital. More than 130,000 children receive care at Children's Hospital of Iowa and its statewide network of outreach clinics each year.
