Exhibition Of Jonathan Sabin Photos Accompanies Iowa Summer Rep 2005

An exhibition of images by Iowa City photographer Jonathan D. Sabin will be on display in the lobby of the University of Iowa Theatre Building throughout the Iowa Summer Rep season, June 23 through July 24.

The 16 images in the exhibition will be available for purchase. The exhibition can be viewed not only at Iowa Summer Rep performances, but also whenever the Theatre Building is open during business hours.

Sabin, the owner of Vortex in downtown Iowa City, says, "At the age of seven, I watched my father, a chemical engineer and photographer, develop a roll of 35mm black and white film. The sheer magic of the moment -- as he peeled the negatives off the stainless reel -- changed my life forever. A good portion of my waking hours over the next 25 years were spent in the darkroom."

In 1973, Sabin became an apprentice to New York industrial/commercial photographer John Kronenberger and in 1975 he enrolled in the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) under the tutelage of Denver photographer Nile Root and filmmaker Martin Rennells.

After graduating in 1978, Sabin became chief cinematographer for KOAI, an NBC affiliate in Flagstaff, AZ, and he later became a crime scene photographer in Tucson and did fashion, commercial and advertising photography, as well as documentary/instructional videography, in Scottsdale.

"While on assignment in Iowa in 1984, I walked into the Kitchen restaurant in Iowa City," Sabin says. "A beautiful young woman asked, 'May I help you?' I answered, 'What's for lunch and are you married?' I spent the next few years commuting between Arizona and Iowa, finally marrying the restaurateur in 1989 and settling in Iowa City."

A selection of Sabin's images -- which have been seen in numerous exhibitions and are in many private collections -- may be viewed at
