Iowa Summer Rep Selected 'Shakespeare In Hollywood' For July 17 Festival Reading

Iowa Summer Rep, the professional Actors Equity company organized by the University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts, has selected "Shakespeare in Hollywood" for the July 17 staged reading that will be part of the 2005 festival of comedies by Ken Ludwig.

Already on the June 24 through July 24 schedule were productions of Ludwig's "Lend Me a Tenor," "Moon Over Buffalo" and "Postmortem" in the UI Theatre Building.

The title of the reading was not identified at the time that the Iowa Summer Rep 2005 season was announced because the rights to "Shakespeare in Hollywood" had not yet been secured.

The fast-paced play-within-a-play comedy of "Shakespeare in Hollywood" was inspired by the attempts of the 1930s movie industry to raise its prestige by producing "talkies" of Shakespeare's plays.

Ludwig, the author of several Broadway and London hits, has won the Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Helen Hayes Awards for shows reminiscent of the "screwball comedies" produced by Broadway and Hollywood decades ago.

Iowa Summer Rep has carved out a unique niche among professional summer companies during the last two decades by making each season a festival of plays by a single contemporary playwright. Summer Rep is a U/RTA (University/Resident Theatre Association) company employing Equity actors and stage managers, as well as students who earn points toward their Actors Equity card.

Tickets for the readings and plays, and discounted season subscriptions, are now on sale through the Hancher Auditorium box office.
