UI Engineering Students Win Space Grant Scholarships

(Name) of (hometown), a (year in school) majoring in (field of study) at the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has received a $6,000 scholarship from the Iowa Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) for the 2005-06 academic year.

The awards are given on the basis of merit.

All six students are involved in the ISGC-supported Base Program directed by Tom Schnell, associate professor of mechanical and director of the Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL), which is a program in the Center for Computer Aided Design (CCAD).

The intent of the ISGC Base Program at the OPL is to prepare students for aerospace careers. Students actively participate in flight simulator studies and actual flight tests. Recently, Base Program students were privileged to participate in a study that utilized the Dynamic Environment Simulator (DES), a 163-ton pilot-in-the-loop centrifuge operated by the U.S. Air Force. Base Program students may also enroll in a short course to become flight test engineers on the OPL/CCAD research aircraft. The students learn about avionics architectures, synthetic and enhanced vision systems, and spatial orientation enhancement systems. The Base Program at the OPL Web page can be found at: http://opl.ecn.uiowa.edu/isgc/.

Composed of academic members including the UI, Iowa State University, the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University, the ISGC is a nonprofit organization sponsored by NASA with support from Iowa academic affiliates, industry and aerospace associations. The ISGC works to coordinate and improve Iowa's future in aerospace science, design and technology and to stimulate aerospace research, education and outreach activities throughout the state.
