Jennifer New To Read From Book On Journals July 15 At Prairie Lights
Jennifer New, communications and events coordinator at the University of Iowa Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, will read and show images from her new book, "Drawing from Life: The Journal As Art," at 8 p.m. Friday, July 15 at Prairie Lights bookstore, 15 S. Dubuque St., downtown Iowa City.
The book is an exploration of the journals of 31 contemporary creative thinkers, including singer David Byrne, cartoonist Lynda Barry and architect Stephen Holl. Images can be found at: www.drawingfromlife.com
New's second book takes readers on a spirited tour into the private worlds of journal keepers -- architects, painters and travelers; a film director, a volcanologist, a quilt maker and a nationally-ranked Scrabble player, to name just a few -- illustrating a range of journal styles and techniques that in the end show how each of us can go about documenting our everyday lives.
She is also the author of "Dan Eldon: The Art of Life," which chronicles the life and work of Dan Eldon, a photojournalist who was killed while on assignment in Somalia in 1993. Learning the story of his life through his 17-volume journal prompted New's interest in journals, leading to her latest book.
