'8 X 10' Features 10-Minute Plays By Undergraduates Feb. 10-13

The University of Iowa Department of Theatre Arts will present "8 X 10," the 2005 edition of the annual Ten-Minute Play Festival that features the work of undergraduate playwrights, at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 10-12, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13 in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building.

"The Ten-Minute Play Festival gives undergraduate playwrights one of their first opportunities to experience the collaborative and creative efforts needed to produce a play," explains assistant artistic director Eric Burchett. "This is also true for many of the directors, actors, designers and crew required to make 10 minutes of script a fully-realized, staged performance.

"This festival produces theater as it should be: fresh ideas, enthusiastic artists and a memorable evening showcasing new talent that will become the heart of tomorrow's theater."

The production will feature:

-- "Sad Faces Eat Breakfast Alone" by Ryan Martin;

-- "Freckle Music" by Sarah Neilson;

-- "Of Heavenly Bodies" by Diana Grisanti;

-- "The Supers" by Jon Kommes;

-- "You're Crazy, Taj Says So" by Lathan Ehlers;

-- "A Summer Evening" by Peter Huang;

-- "Horizon" by Leslie Koppenhaver; and

-- "Licking Pollock" by Toni Wilson.

The artistic director -- and founder -- of the festival is faculty member Kate Aspengren.

Admission will be $6 ($4 for students, seniors and youth) at the door. Tickets will go on sale one hour before curtain time.

Some of the plays contain material of an adult nature. Potential audience member who are concerned about whether the production is appropriate for them should contact the Department of Theatre Arts -- 319-335-2700 -- for additional information.

The Department of Theatre Arts is an academic unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
