Hancher Presents National Acrobats Of Taiwan March 3
The National Acrobats of Taiwan, which epitomizes gymnastic, juggling, balancing and contortionist traditions stretching back more than 2,000 years, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in Hancher Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus.
Handstands on stools stacked 30 feet high, spinning plates balanced on rods, jugglers spinning large pots on their heads, elbows and feet -- these are just a few of the skills that characterize the performances of the National Acrobats of Taiwan. The 40-member company is distinctive for its use of ordinary household items -- including tables, chairs, ladders, bowls, plates and jars -- in not-at-all ordinary ways.
Since the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 240 A.D.), skills such as these have been cultivated as arts in Chinese civilization. Associated with the prestigious Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy of Taipei, the National Acrobats of Taiwan is considered the leading acrobatic ensemble preserving these traditions in Taiwan.
Artists of the National Acrobats of Taiwan have toured the world as the Republic of China's national acrobatic troupe, presenting more than 500 performances each year, both in Taiwan and on tour.
The University of Iowa Community Credit Union is the sponsor of the performance, through the University of Iowa Foundation, with media support from KDAT-FM.
