WSUI Opens 'Live From Prairie Lights' Archives To Rebroadcast Chang Reading

To mark the arrival of Lan Samantha Chang as director of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, University of Iowa radio station WSUI will open its "Live from Prairie Lights" archives to rebroadcast an earlier reading by Chang at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6. Listen to WSUI at AM 910, or listen on the Internet at wsui.uiowa.edu.

Chang's reading, hosted by Julie Englander, was originally broadcast on WSUI July 27, 2004.

Chang, a Writers' Workshop alumna, read on that occasion from her novel "Inheritance." The broadcast is one in a series of winter-break Friday broadcasts leading up to the resumption of live events on Jan. 18, with a reading by prolific Iowa mystery writer Max Allan Collins.

Anna Shin wrote in the Seattle Contemporary Review of Asian American Literature, "Chang's restrained prose enthralls with its sheer elegance, gaining power as much from what is left unsaid as from that which is articulated. Ms. Chang also has the rare ability to fashion tales whose cumulative sum is greater than their individual parts; in her characters' lives, one finds a depth of meaning made universal not despite its specificity, but because of it." She is also the author of "Hunger: A Novella and Stories."

Chang has been honored as the California Book Award Silver Medalist, as a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award and with a Bay Area Book Award. Her work has also been nominated for the PEN Center USA West Award and the PEN Hemingway Literature Prize. She has published stories in the Atlantic Monthly, Ploughshares, Story and twice in "The Best American Short Stories." She has also held Wallace Stegner and Truman Capote fellowships at Stanford University, as well as fellowship from Princeton University, the Radcliffe Institute and the National Endowment for the Arts.
She has taught in the Writers' Workshop and at Warren Wilson College and Stanford University, and she returns to the UI from a position as Briggs-Copeland Lecturer at Harvard University.

The Writers' Workshop is an academic unit of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
