Weinstein Receives Shands Award For Orthopaedics Contributions
Stuart L. Weinstein, M.D., the Ignacio V. Ponseti Chair and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, recently received the 2005 Alfred R. Shands Award, presented by the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Orthopaedic Association.
Named for Alfred R. Shands, Sr., the award is given annually to an American or Canadian citizen who has made significant contributions to the field of orthopaedics and has dedicated a significant portion of his or her career to furthering knowledge in the field of musculoskeletal disease.
Weinstein is a recognized expert in the areas of spinal deformity and hip disorders in children, pediatric hip joint mechanics and the treatment of pediatric orthopaedic conditions. He currently serves as president of the 29,000-member American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Weinstein received the award earlier this year at the AAOS annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
