England Named Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow

Sarah England, Ph.D., UI associate professor of physiology and biophysics in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, is one of seven health professionals nationwide to be named a 2005-2006 Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow.

The prestigious fellowship is awarded annually on a competitive basis and is designed to provide outstanding mid-career health professionals an understanding of the federal health policy process. The program was established by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 1973 and is administered by the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Starting in September, England will spend one year in Washington, D.C., learning about and participating in federal public policy processes related to health. After an initial orientation period of three months, England will work in a congressional office or an office of the executive branch with responsibilities for health legislation and programs.

The program aims to provide fellows with an experience that will help them improve health policy within their own local communities. Upon her return to the UI, England will receive additional support for up to two years to apply her experience locally and continue her development as health policy leader.

England joined the UI in 1997. Her research primarily focuses on the role of potassium channels in regulating smooth muscle function, particularly as they pertain to women's reproductive health and premature labor.
