Meet International Writers At CIVIC Picnic Sept. 7

The Council for International Visitors to Iowa Cities (CIVIC) invites the public to a potluck picnic to welcome the 37 participants in the 2005 International Writing Program (IWP). The picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Shelter No. 3, Upper City Park, 200 E. Park Road in Iowa City. Those planning to attend are asked to bring a main dish, salad or dessert to serve 10 to 12 people.

"The picnic is CIVIC's way of welcoming the IWP writers," CIVIC office coordinator Marianne Weiss said. "It's also a way for the writers to meet the community and for the community to meet writers from all over the world."

The writers come from 30 countries including Belgium, Colombia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Libya, Macedonia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Those wishing to attend should RSVP no later than Friday, Sept. 2. To do so, contact Suzanne Kirchner at msuzanne_kirchner@yahoo.com, 319-338-7300 or Marianne Weiss at marianne-weiss@uiowa.edu, 319-335-0351. Please indicate how many people are coming and what type of food you are planning to bring.

CIVIC hosts international visitors who have been invited by United States embassies to participate in the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program. As a member of the National Council for International Visitors, CIVIC is one of 98 nationwide community organizations that promote intercultural exchange between international leaders and the educational and business communities. When a visit includes eastern Iowa, CIVIC arranges for professional consultations and field trips to industrial, scientific, educational and business facilities. Visitors are also invited to participate in the social and cultural life of our communities through home hospitality, sightseeing and cultural and recreational events.

CIVIC is part of International Programs, which consists of a number of offices, centers, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost and dean for International Programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and promote global scholarship.
