Medicine, Pharmacy White Coat Ceremonies Aug. 19 & 20
WHAT: White Coat Ceremonies for incoming University of Iowa medical and pharmacy students
WHEN/WHERE: UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine: 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Clapp Recital Hall; UI College of Pharmacy: 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union
The White Coat Ceremonies at the UI Carver College of Medicine and the UI College of Pharmacy are events welcoming new students to these colleges.
At the UI Carver College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony, Paul James, M.D., professor and head of family medicine, will deliver an address to the students titled, "Healing in a Scientific Age: Finding Meaning in Medicine." Following James' speech, the medical students will be ceremonially cloaked with their first white laboratory coats. Then, in the presence of family, friends and faculty, the students will recite the Oath of Hippocrates.
At the UI College of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony, Jordan Cohen, Ph.D., dean of the college, will address the students. Thomas Halterman of West Des Moines, a 1989 UI pharmacy graduate, CEO of Outcomes Pharmaceutical Health Care and president of the UI College of Pharmacy Alumni Board; and Susan Purcell of Dubuque, a 1974 UI pharmacy graduate, manager of Mercy CareMor Pharmacy and co-founder of the company Miller-Purcell, will offer welcoming remarks. After receiving their white laboratory coats and name badges, the students will recite the Oath of a Pharmacist.
