Pearcy Named Director Of Risk Management For Regents Universities

Donna L. Pearcy, director of risk management for the Dallas County Community College District in Texas, has been named director of the University of Iowa Office of Risk Management, Insurance and Loss Prevention, effective Aug. 29.

Pearcy will also coordinate risk management activities for Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa as part of ongoing efforts to coordinate certain business services and functions at the three schools. Each of the schools was represented in the search committee that selected Pearcy.

UI Business Manager Andrew M. Ives, who has filled the role of UI risk management director on an interim basis since Diana Cook left the position in late 2004, will return full-time to his role overseeing the UI offices of Risk Management, Environmental Compliance and Property Management and signing capital construction and other major contracts for the university.

Risk management at the Regents institutions involves administering insurance and self-insurance programs covering property and liability risks, including buildings, equipment, fine art, vehicles, fidelity and liability claims. Its goal is to minimize the risk of financial loss to the schools by identifying and analyzing risk, implementation of loss control programs and contractual transfer or other risk reduction or financing techniques.

Pearcy has been risk management director of the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) since 1997, when the position was created under the vice chancellor of business affairs. The DCCCD has about 64,000 students at seven major colleges. Pearcy's job has involved analyzing risk exposures, developing alternatives and implementing strategies for minimizing human, financial and operational loss to DCCCD.

She was previously employed by, among other companies, American Airlines, LSG/SkyChefs Inc. and Jewel Osco Southwest Inc., and she has experience in claims adjusting and management, insurance coverage procurement and analysis and workflow analysis and training.

She holds an MBA and B.S. in business administration from Southeast Missouri University. Her salary as director of risk management at the UI will be $85,000.
