UI Concrete Canoe Team Takes Second Place
(Name) of (hometown), a (year in school) in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, is a member of the UI concrete canoe team that recently placed second in the Midwest Regional Competition of the National Concrete Canoe Competition.
The competition, held April 23 at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, is an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) administered design competition in which students work as a team to design and construct a canoe made of lightweight concrete. The students learn about hull design, concrete design and testing, construction and canoe racing.
The competition is comprised of four parts: design paper, presentation, aesthetics and racing. The races involve two two-man races, two two-women races and one four-person coed race.
In addition to the UI team, captained by Adam Wilhelm and Aaron Burkhardt, other participating schools were: University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota-Mankato State, North Dakota State University, South Dakota State University, Iowa State University, and University of Wisconsin-Platteville (first place winner).
