WSUI/KSUI Raises Record-Breaking $223,000 During Spring Fund Drive
Public radio stations WSUI-AM 910 and KSUI-FM 91.7, listener-supported services of the University of Iowa, raised an all-time drive high of $223,000 through the generous contributions of its listeners.
"Gifts great and small added up to an overwhelming vote of support for public radio in Eastern Iowa," said Nancy Hagen, WSUI/KSUI's interim director of marketing.
The fund drive experienced a significant increase in the number of people contributing to the stations for the first time and a new survey question revealed that the majority of donors use both the news and classical services. Hagen added, "At a time when communities across the country are losing classical music services, it's heartening to see the support for classical music on the radio here in Eastern Iowa on the increase. The dual, full-service format of WSUI News and Information and KSUI Classical Radio is envied within the industry and listeners are recognizing this gem in their local community."
The spring fund drive culminated in an eight-day on-air campaign where listeners call in and pledge their annual support to the stations with the help of over 100 volunteers who work throughout the week to answer phones. "It's amazing to see the devotion of the phone volunteers who come into our studios during the pledge drive," said Joan Kjaer, WSUI/KSUI's interim director of broadcasting. "Not only do they seem to know our programming schedules better than we do, they fire our spirits with their enthusiasm and love of public radio."
WSUI/KSUI relies on the semi-annual drives to support a third of their annual operating budget.
