Bee Lavender And Lauren Sanders Read On WSUI April 15

Bee Lavender and Lauren Sanders will read from their work at 8 p.m. Friday, April 15 on the "Live from Prairie Lights" series on University of Iowa radio station WSUI, AM 910.

The reading, hosted by Julie Englander, will be a free event in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. Listen on the Internet at wsui.uiowa.edu.

Lavender will read from "Lessons in Taxidermy," an account of her battle with childhood cancer, and Sanders, a Lambda Literary Award winner, will read from her new novel, "With or Without You."

Lavender is the co-editor of two books, "Breeder: Real-Life Stories from the New Generation of Mothers" and "Mamaphonic: Balancing Motherhood and Other Creative Acts." She is also the publisher of Hip Mama magazine and creator Girl-Mom, an advocacy website for teen parents.

"Bee Lavender is a fantastic writer. Her work is deep and personal, and I don't think there are any places she's scared to go," wrote Michelle Tea, author of "Rent Girl."

Sanders won the 2000 Lambda Award for her debut, "Kamikaze Lust." A starred preview in Publishers Weekly states, "Her vibrant, vigorous second novel is a sendup of America's obsession with pop culture, B-list celebrities and prison life, peopled by a cast of lonely, desperate characters whose only fault is that they love too much . . . In lyrical, potent prose, Sanders navigates the terrain of loneliness, obsession and desperation with the same skillful precision as her vulnerable, calculating protagonist."

Eileen Myles, author of "Chelsea Girls" and "Cool for You," called "With or Without You," "A hot poetic book I wouldn't kick out of bed."

Sanders's writing has appeared in many publications including the American Book Review, Poets & Writers and Time Out New York.
