Sports Medicine Leader To Offer Public Seminar

A graduate of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine who has worked with some of the world's elite athletes will present a public seminar on sports medicine from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5 in the Larson Conference Room at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Stan James, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon in Eugene, Ore., has helped design Nike athletic shoes. A leader in the field of sports medicine, he has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications and lectured in Canada, Mexico, Korea, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Great Britain and Italy.

James will discuss proper training techniques and the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. He will answer questions from the audience about issues and problems commonly associated with running. The seminar is presented free of charge and is open to the public.

As part of his practice, James has treated elite athletes including Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler (basketball), Carl Lewis, Mary Slaney and Willie Davenport (track), Pete Sampras (tennis) and Dan Fouts (football).

The Larson Conference Room is located in the Department of Orthopaedics in the lower level of the Pomerantz Family Pavilion at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Registration for this free public seminar is not required, but it is encouraged.
