High School Journalists To Attend October IHSPA Conferences At UI, Drake

The University of Iowa will host more than 300 high school journalists Wednesday, Oct. 6 during the Iowa High School Press Association (IHSPA) annual Fall State Conference in the Iowa Memorial Union. The conference, "Reality Check: Discover 50 Ways to Make Your Journalism Career Worthwhile," is sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Students staffing their high schools' newspapers, yearbooks, broadcast and web programs will attend sessions addressing a variety of topics related to journalism. The conference will also include standard events, such as an Advisers' Luncheon, and on-site writing and photography contests and publication critiques for the students.

Featured guests include media professionals from the Des Moines Register, Iowa City Press-Citizen, KCRG-TV, The Gazette, the Quad Cities Times, staff members of the Daily Iowan student newspaper at the UI, high school journalism students and their teachers, and faculty from the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Iowa State University Greenlee School of Journalism and Clarke College.

IHSPA also will hold its annual Fall Regional Conference in Des Moines on Monday, Oct. 18 at Drake University. Media professionals from Des Moines and Eastern Iowa, as well as high school journalism students and their teachers, and journalism faculty from Drake University, Iowa State University and Simpson College, will present sessions throughout the day.

Registration for both of the conferences begins at 8:15 a.m. on their respective days, with the welcoming ceremonies at 8:45 a.m. and breakout sessions at 9:05 a.m. Both conferences will conclude at 3 p.m., following an awards ceremony honoring the winners of various high school journalism contests as well as the 2004 recipients of the Administrator of the Year and the Stratton and Vahl journalism education awards.
