UI Speakers Bureau Connects Faculty, Staff With Iowa Groups Seeking Speakers
The University of Iowa shares its educational opportunities with communities around the state by sending faculty and staff members to speak to a variety of community organizations. This effort is coordinated through the UI Speakers Bureau, which provides a list of available speakers and topics and encourages groups of all kinds -- service clubs, professional and educational associations, library groups, senior centers, schools, churches -- to invite a UI speaker to their town.
This year, the Speakers Bureau will join the celebration of a Year of the Arts and Humanities with a group of featured speakers representing the broad spectrum of the arts and humanities on campus. These include Patricia Foster, professor of English; Christopher Merrill, director of the International Writing Program; Chuck Swanson, executive director of Hancher Auditorium; and Steve Thunder-McGuire, professor of art history and of curriculum and instruction.
These and many other speakers offer insights on topics of interest and use to Iowans, whether local or global, cultural or political, scientific or literary. In recent years the UI Speakers Bureau has scheduled faculty and staff members to speak to more than 50 groups statewide, including the Center for Women at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Centerville Rotary, Iowa Archaeological Society, Iowa Funeral Directors Association, Kiwanis groups in Burlington and Muscatine, and high school groups in Clarion, Clear Creek-Amana, Harlan, Monticello and Olin.
Information about the Speakers Bureau, including a list of potential topics is available online, http://www.uiowa.edu/speakersbureau/. Speakers can be arranged by filling out the online speaker request form or by contacting Jane Van Voorhis at 319/335-0011, firstname.lastname@example.org.
