University of Iowa News Release

Sept. 15, 2004

MEDIA ADVISORY: Press Conference Monday On 'A Nation Deceived'

WHAT: A press conference to release a national report "A Nation Deceived: How Schools Hold Back America's Brightest Students." The report explores why thousands of academically gifted K-12 students across the country are being denied an opportunity to take part in acceleration programs, from simple mentoring and Advanced Placement courses to the skipping of subjects or complete grade levels and early college entrance.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20.

WHERE: Sixth-floor conference room of the University of Iowa Blank Honors Center. The Honors Center is attached to, and located behind, Daum Residence Hall at 221 N. Clinton St., at the corner of Bloomington Street and the Cleary Walkway. Take the elevator to the sixth floor. A map and parking information is available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/%7Emaps/b/bhc1.htm

WHY: Schools across the country are failing to give academically unchallenged students opportunities to learn to their full potential by denying them access to accelerated education. The report, which has been endorsed by the National Association for Gifted Children, debunks many of the myths surrounding accelerated education, most notably that it draws resources from other students, that it poses psychological or social risks to students and that it's a form of elitism.

WHO: Lead authors Nicholas Colangelo, director of the Belin-Blank Center, and Susan Assouline, associate director of the center; UI College of Education Dean Sandra Damico; Judy Jeffrey, interim director of the Iowa Department of Education; and several students who have personally taken part in accelerated learning.

OTHER INFORMATION: A multbox will be available for broadcast media. Hard copies of the report and other materials will also be available to attendees. For a summary of the report, go to www.nationdeceived.org. An earlier news release previewing the report is available at http://news-releases.uiowa.edu/2004/may/052004gifted-children.html.
