IWP Writers From India And Bolivia Read Sept. 26 At Prairie Lights

The University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) and the Iowa Writers' workshop will present a joint reading at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

The free reading will feature two writers in residence at the IWP -- poet and essayist Rajeevan Thachom Poyil from India and fiction writer Giovanna Rivero from Bolivia -- as well as Iowa Writers' Workshop student Steve Kistvlenty.

Thachom Poyil writes poetry both in English and Malayalam, and his work has been translated into more than a half-dozen languages. Rivero's most recent work is the erotic novel "The Chameleons."

Full biographies of the IWP writers are at http://www.uiowa.edu/~iwp/WRIT/WRITmain.html.

Thirty-nine writers, representing 28 countries, will be in residence at the University of Iowa during the next three months as participants in the IWP. The IWP is a unique residency program that each year promotes international understanding by assembling a "United Nations of writing" at the UI. Over the years, more than a thousand writers from more than 115 countries have completed residencies in the program.

The Iowa Writers' Workshop is an academic program of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Joint IWP/Writers' Workshop readings will continue most Sundays through October.
