UI Alumni Association Presents 'Shoedog' Reception And Discussion
The University of Iowa Alumni Association, UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication invite alumni and friends to "Shoedog," a play written by Stephen G. Bloom and Brian L. Cronk.
The play will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Dubuque Five Flags Theater, 405 Main St., Dubuque, Iowa. Before the play, an alumni reception will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a question and answer session will follow the play. This post-show discussion with the playwrights, actors and director will raise the curtain and allow a glimpse into the process of how a play is written, directed and performed.
Bloom, a UI professor of journalism and author of "Postville: A Clash of Cultures In Heartland America," wrote "Shoedog" with former colleague and friend Brian L. Cronk. The play, directed by Melissa McBain, is based on a short story by Bloom, "The Little Man." With the backdrop of a failing business, Murray, a master shoe salesman (or shoedog), attempts to seduce 16-year-old Elliot into the dying profession of selling shoes.
Anyone who remembers the days when shoe shopping involved an expert salesman measuring your foot, retrieving a selection of sizes and styles from a mysterious back room, and guiding your foot into place for a perfect fit, will appreciate a look at the side of shoe sales the customer never saw.
The Saturday evening performance is part of the University of Iowa celebration of The Year of the Arts and Humanities. Tickets for the performance and the alumni reception are free to University of Iowa alumni and guests.
