UI College Of Dentistry Presents Top Honors

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and the UI Dental Alumni Association presented their highest awards to two graduates who have advanced the dental profession and educated generations of dentists.

James Bramson, D.D.S., a 1979 UI dental graduate and executive director of the American Dental Association (ADA), received the 2004 Alumnus of the Year Award. Jamie Sharp, M.S., a 1978 graduate and the UI College of Dentistry's continuing education coordinator, was named 2004 Educator of the Year. The awards were presented Oct. 16 during the annual meeting of the UI Dental Alumni Association.

Raised in Moville, Iowa, Bramson practiced in Parkersburg and Ackley after completing dental school at the UI. He also took an active role with the Iowa Dental Association, the state's organization of dental professionals. Interested in further professional service, he applied for an administrative training fellowship with the ADA in Chicago.

After completing the program in 1987, Bramson held a series of positions with the ADA, then was appointed executive director of the Massachusetts Dental Society in 1997. He returned to the ADA as executive director in 2001, overseeing an organization of 250,000 members, 425 staff and a $100 million budget.

A California native, Sharp received a master's degree in dental hygiene from the UI. She previously had practiced dental hygiene in California, served with professional organizations and boards, and worked as an administrative assistant in continuing education at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry.

Sharp's academic experience prompted the UI College of Dentistry to appoint her interim director of its continuing education program while she pursued her graduate studies. She received a full-time faculty appointment in 1978, and since has coordinated continuing education and taught students in the UI dentistry and dental hygiene programs. Sharp retires next year.
