Amenity Foundation Establishes Nursing Scholarship
The John and Wendy Boardman/Amenity Foundation Geriatric Palliative Care Scholarship has been established at the University of Iowa College of Nursing to assist students who are pursuing a career in geriatrics, hospice work or palliative care.
The scholarship was established by John and Wendy Boardman, who own Amenity Hospice, a Medicare-certified hospice service in eastern Iowa that specializes in the care of individuals with dementia, heart and lung disease. The Boardmans are 1987 UI graduates of the bachelor of science in nursing program. John Boardman received a master's in hospital and health administration from the UI in 1991.
"At Amenity, we are proud to contribute to this type of crucial educational support for nurses in eastern Iowa and we strongly encourage others within the hospice industry to do the same," John Boardman said. "Amenity Hospice and the Amenity Foundation were founded to help meet the growing need for end-of-life care here in eastern Iowa. Too many patients did not have access to the care they required and deserved. We hope this scholarship will prove significant in our continuing mission to proactively address eastern Iowa's growing geriatric end-of-life care needs."
The scholarship will be awarded yearly through the college's scholarship committee to an undergraduate or graduate nursing student with a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
"This scholarship is a wonderful example of how an enlightened health care provider such as Amenity Hospice can support the community it serves," said Melanie C. Dreher, Ph.D., the Kelting Dean and professor of nursing. "Wendy and John Boardman's deep commitment to assuring that there will be well prepared nurses to provide quality care at the end of life is typical of their thoughtful and futuristic approach to the health and welfare of Iowa citizens."
