WSUI/KSUI Ask For Donor Support
Public radio stations WSUI-AM 910 and KSUI-FM 91.7, listener supported services of the University of Iowa, will hold their annual fall on-air fund drive running from Oct. 15 through Oct. 22.
"The drive is an opportunity to connect with our listeners," said Kaitlynn Lewis Voigt, WSUI/KSUI marketing manager. "The response of support from our previous drives has been impressive. Our listeners make our radio stations happen, and we need their help, now more than ever."
The weeklong, on-air fund drive is a time for listeners to call in and pledge their annual support of the stations. Over 100 volunteers work throughout the week to answer phones. Previous fund drives have raised as much as $219,000 from more than 2,000 listeners. WSUI/KSUI relies on the semi-annual drives to support almost a third of their annual operating budget. The support of donors is becoming more and important as the UI deals with budget cuts.
"We depend on the support of our listeners. Our focus this drive is to reach out to new potential contributors while celebrating the impact of our current donors. They really do make a difference," said Voigt.
UI President David Skorton will make his regular appearance during the drive on the morning of Oct. 22, going on the air on both stations to ask listeners to join him in the support of the UI's public radio stations.
On Oct. 15, there will be a special fundraising week kick-off show of "Talk of Iowa Live from the Java House" that will be simulcast at 10 a.m. on both stations. The show will feature live music by Big Wooden Radio at the Java House on 211 East Washington St., downtown Iowa City. As part of a trivia contest with prizes, host Ben Kieffer and Joan Kjaer, interim director of UI Broadcasting Services and KSUI program director, will test the live audience's knowledge of public radio in Iowa.
