Opportunity At Iowa Hosts Classic Upward Bound Of Waterloo
The University of Iowa Opportunity at Iowa office will host a group of 30 high school students from University of Northern Iowa's Classic Upward Bound program Saturday, Oct. 9.
Students will tour the UI campus, hear presentations about how to prepare for and succeed in college, as well as tips on how to finance a higher education. Paulette Willis, a UI graduate student in mathematics, will give a presentation titled "Why Study Math and Physics?" At the end of the day the students will attend a performance of the contemporary dance company Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at Hancher Auditorium.
Opportunity at Iowa, part of the Office of the Provost, is a coordinated university-wide effort to create and maintain campus diversity and to provide opportunities for all university students interested in other cultures. Working collaboratively with such offices as Admissions, Orientation, Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Student Financial Aid, the Graduate College and Support Service Programs, Opportunity at Iowa provides information about various academic resources available to enhance a student's collegiate experience while attending the UI.
The UNI Classic Upward Bound program is a federally funded, pre-college program for high school students living in Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Classic Upward Bound identifies low-income and/or first generation students with the potential for completing secondary education, then assist program participants in reaching this goal by offering academic, social and cultural activities. The program accepts applications from students who have completed eighth grade or are currently enrolled in ninth through 11th grades and attend a school in Waterloo or Cedar Falls.
