Oct. 14 'Preview Party and Auction' Will Precede Faculty Show At UI Museum of Art

The University of Iowa Museum (UIMA) of Art will present a "Preview Party and Auction" featuring works of art by faculty of the UI School of Art and Art History at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in the museum.

The event will be an opportunity to preview "Faculty Exhibition 2004," which opens at the UIMA Friday, Oct. 15, and to bid on donated works of art by current and retired UI School of Art and Art History faculty members.

During the Thursday evening preview, more than 20 donated works will be auctioned off to assist the museum in meeting its $500,000 goal for a $1 million challenge from the Levitt Foundation. All proceeds from the "Preview Party and Auction" will benefit the fund established to meet this challenge, the Members Special Exhibition Fund.

The auction will begin at 8 p.m. The auctioneer will be Howard Collinson, director of the UIMA.

Current and retired faculty members who have donated works of art to be auctioned off include Thomas Aprile, Timothy Barrett, Byron Burford, Gretchen Caracas, Chunghi Choo, Ronald Cohen, David Dunlap, Laurel Farrin, Peter Feldstein, Robert Glasgow, Ab Gratama, Sue Hettmansperger, Julie Hochstrasser, Bunny McBride, Virginia Myers, Genie Patrick, Margaret Rochelle, Howard Rogovin, Margaret Stratton, Steve Thunder-McGuire, George Walker, Susan White, Rachel Williams, Laura Young and Kee-ho Yuen.

"The UIMA would not exist without support from both the current and retired faculty of the School of Art and Art History," Collinson said. "And especially during the university's Year of the Arts and Humanities, the faculty show and auction fundraiser celebrate the high quality of artistic achievement at the UI."

Works of art donated for the auction will be on view prior to and following the UIMA event, from Oct. 8 through Oct. 30, at Hudson River Gallery. On Friday, Oct. 8, the gallery will also host a "Preview Reception" as part of the Iowa City Gallery Walk, from 5 to 8 p.m. Hudson River is located at 538 South Gilbert Street in Iowa City and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The "Preview Party and Auction" is sponsored by Hudson River Gallery and Frame Company and will be hosted by the UIMA Members Council. Food will be provided by Atlas World Grill. A cash bar will also be available.

Admission to the "Preview Party and Auction" will be $50 and may be obtained by calling 319-335-1727. All proceeds from ticket sales will also benefit the Members Special Exhibition Fund.
