Gov. Tom Vilsack recently honored two May 2004 University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences graduates and ROTC cadets as the top UI ROTC graduates by presenting them with the Governor’s Award for Outstanding ROTC Cadets.
The ceremony took place May 4 at the Capitol Building in Des Moines and was attended by Gov. Vilsack, UI President David J. Skorton, the cadets and their immediate family members.
Air Force Cadet Suzanne Nichols of Marion, Iowa, daughter of Richard and Kathleen Nichols, earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a cumulative GPA of 3.31 from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Maj. G. Dave Lewis, assistant professor, Department of Military Science, Army ROTC, said that Cadet Nichols distinguished herself as a true leader by reaching the highest rank possible in her Cadet Wing, serving as the Wing Commander, and winning the Iron Person of the Year Award for physical fitness. She has been selected to serve as a personnel officer.
Army Cadet LTC Ryan Post, son of Ron and Carol Post and father of Justin
Post, all of the Forest City, Iowa area, earned a bachelor’s degree
in history with 3.84 GPA. He returned to Iowa in 1997, following active duty
enlisted service, to attend college. While completing his undergraduate degree
and serving as the Cadet Battalion Commander, he worked as an officer on
the Forest City police force. Cadet Post will return to active duty this
month following his commission as a second lieutenant in the Aviation Corps.
