Dettmer Named Interim Associate Dean In College Of Liberal Arts & Sciences

Helena Dettmer, a University of Iowa professor of classics, will serve as interim associate dean for academic programs and services in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dean Linda Maxson announced the one-year interim appointment, which begins in August.

Dettmer, who also heads the college's Division of Interdisciplinary Programs, will take over for the departing Fred Antczak, who has been named the founding dean of the new College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

Maxson said Dettmer's demonstrated leadership and administrative skills will be an asset to the dean's office.

"In her service to the college, Helena has demonstrated her understanding of and sympathy for the range of disciplines we represent and the forms of teaching we undertake," Maxson said. "She is known for her skill at shared governance and for fostering a high level of collegiality. She has been extremely thoughtful, creative, and even-handed in her administrative roles, and as a participant in discussions of collegiate policy and programs."

Dettmer served as chair of the classics department from 1993 to 2001, and as interim chair of French and Italian in 1998-99, before being selected as founding director of Interdisciplinary Programs in 2001. She has twice been elected to the college's executive committee and has served on the college's advisory committee on promotion and tenure. She is currently a member of the UI's Year of the Arts and Humanities Advisory Committee and of the Vice President for Research Review Committee for Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Projects. She has received the UI's Faculty Scholar Award and May Brodbeck Award.

The college plans to conduct an internal search for a permanent associate dean to step in by July 2005. The search committee is accepting applications through Oct. 1. Details about the position are available on the college's web site, http://www.clas.uiowa.edu/
