UI Pharmacology Head Receives Pain Research Award
Gerald Gebhart, Ph.D., professor and head of pharmacology in the University
of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been awarded
the 2004 Purdue Pharma Prize for Pain Research. This honor, initiated in
2002 to recognize outstanding contributions to pain research, is awarded
only once every two years, and carries a $50,000 honorarium. Gebhart received
the award and presented a lecture on his current work during the Spring Pain
Research Conference April 30.
Gebhart has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and currently serves on several editorial boards. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Pain and chairman of the editorial board of Pain Research and Clinical Management. In 2003, he received the American Pain Society's Distinguished Service Award.
Gebhart received a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois and a doctoral degree in pharmacology from the UI. He joined the UI faculty in 1973 and became head of the Department of Pharmacology in 1996.
