UI To Sponsor Forum On Hate, Harassment April 8
The University of Iowa will hold a forum on hate, harassment and indifference at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Lucas-Dodge Room of the Iowa Memorial Union. The forum will feature a keynote address by Valerie Jenness, a leading expert on hate crime, hate speech and discrimination, as well as a student panel and audience discussion.
Jenness, professor and chair of the department of criminology, law and society at the University of California at Irvine, will speak about the national and local picture of hate crime and strategies for change. She is the author of three books, "Making Hate a Crime: From Social Movement to Law Enforcement Practice," "Hate Crimes: New Social Movements and the Politics of Violence" and "Making it Work: The Prostitutes' Rights Movement in Perspective," as well as numerous articles on the politics of prostitution, AIDS and civil liberties, hate crimes and hate crime law, and the gay/lesbian movement and the women's movement in the United States.
Following Jenness' address, students will discuss issues of hate, harassment and indifference on campus and in the community. Panelists represent a number of UI student organizations including the Asian American Coalition, Multicultural Business Student Association, Black Graduate and Professional Students, Social Work Student Association, Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgendered and Allied Union, and Muslim Student Association. After the panel discussion, all forum participants will have an opportunity for small group discussions of the issues and ideas for bringing about change.
The forum is sponsored by the UI Center for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies, the Department of Sociology, the School of Social Work, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, Opportunity at Iowa and the Office of the Provost.
