UI Engineer Wins Fulbright Award

Marian Muste, associate research engineer in the University of Iowa College of Engineering's renowned research unit of IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering and adjunct associate professor with the college, has won a Senior Scholar Fulbright Award to conduct research in Germany in fall 2004.

The award category recognizes professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments, in addition to the original Fulbright purpose of advancing mutual understanding, establishing long-term cooperation and creating opportunities for institutional linkages. The Fulbright Award consists of monthly stipend, travel expenses, comprehensive health insurance and allowance for the three-month duration of the grant.

Muste's primary areas of research interest include experimental hydraulics and fluid mechanics. Muste, who earned his master's degree and doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from the UI College of Engineering in 1993 and 1995, respectively, has served as coordinator of the college's fluids laboratory and as instructor for the course, "Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer." He says he plans to use his Fulbright to further study aspects of sediment transport using non-intrusive, laser-based techniques and integration of real-time monitoring technique in the management of aquatic environment.

His credits include publication of: three textbooks, 27 papers in refereed technical journals, 75 papers in conference proceedings, 24 technical reports and three patents. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Association for Hydraulic Engineering and Research (where he currently serves as chairman of the hydraulic instrumentation section), member of the Iowa Comprehensive Workgroup on Stormwater Management, and member of the UNESCO Working Group on Data Requirements for Adaptive Integrated Water Management.
