Registration Is Under Way For Youth Entrepreneur Camp
Can today's fifth grader become tomorrow's millionaire? With entrepreneurial training, it may be possible. The John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) at the University of Iowa will present a summer Youth Entrepreneur Camp, where Eastern Iowa kids can learn what it's really like to start a business.
Sponsored by the UI's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) and Hills Bank and Trust Company, this exceptional experience provides students in fourth, fifth or sixth grades with a hands-on look at becoming an entrepreneur.
Students can register now for the camp, which is from July 12-16, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily in the John Pappajohn Business Building. Participants will learn about entrepreneurship through classroom and practical experience. They will identify the basic skills required of entrepreneurs, learn how to market a product or service, determine profit potential for a new venture, and by the end the week, develop a plan to start their own businesses.
"This workshop helps participants take a kernel of an idea and start to develop it into a business plan. Presentations from successful entrepreneurs help them see the potential of their ideas," said JPEC director David Hensley. "Developing entrepreneurial skills is something that will be beneficial to them throughout their entire lives, whatever their career path may be."
The user-friendly course materials are designed specifically for youth, and include activities to stimulate interest in the various aspects of entrepreneurship.
Registration for the camp must be received by May 7. Cost is $120, which includes bus transportation for tours to business sites, class materials, snacks, lunches and graduation reception. Several full scholarships are available for those in need. Those who register before April 23 will receive $20 off the normal fee.
